1. JIS HMD-5 Steel Introduction

JIS HMD-5 is a high-performance cold work tool steel developed by Hitachi Metals under the Japanese JIS standard. With a composition of 0.70-0.80% carbon and 1.00-1.10% chromium, it combines exceptional hardness (58-63 HRC post-quenching) and wear resistance. Its pre-hardened state (28-32 HRC) simplifies machining, while thermal stability up to 500°C ensures reliability in demanding environments. Widely used in automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries, HMD-5 is ideal for precision tools like blanking dies, shear blades, and injection mold inserts, offering extended tool lifespan and cost-efficiency.

1.) Hardness: The hardness of 7CrSiMnMoV typically ranges from 58 to 62 HRC (Rockwell Hardness C scale), making it a very hard and wear-resistant material. 2.)Strength: 7CrSiMnMoV has a high tensile strength, typically ranging from 2000 to 2500 MPa, which makes it suitable for applications that require high strength and toughness.  


3.) Toughness: This steel has good toughness and impact resistance, which helps prevent cracking and chipping during cutting or forming operations.  


4.) Wear resistance: 7CrSiMnMoV has excellent wear resistance, which allows it to maintain its cutting edge sharpness and dimensional stability even under high-stress conditions. 5.) Corrosion resistance: This steel has good corrosion resistance, but it is not as corrosion-resistant as stainless steels. It is important to properly maintain and store tools made from 7CrSiMnMoV to prevent corrosion. 6.) Machinability: 7CrSiMnMoV is relatively easy to machine and grind, allowing for the production of complex and precise tooling components.

5. JIS HMD-5 Tool Steel Heat Treatment

1. )Annealing: The steel is heated to a temperature of around 800-850°C and then slowly cooled in the furnace to relieve internal stresses and improve machinability. 2. )Preheating: The steel is preheated to a temperature of around 500-600°C before the hardening process to ensure uniform heating and prevent cracking. 3. )Hardening: The steel is heated to a temperature of around 1000-1050°C and then quenched in oil, water, or polymer to achieve the desired hardness and improve wear resistance. 4. )Tempering: The hardened steel is then tempered by reheating it to a temperature of around 200-600°C, depending on the desired hardness and toughness. The tempering process helps to reduce internal stresses and improve the steel's toughness and impact resistance. 5. )Stress relieving: To further reduce internal stresses and improve dimensional stability, the steel can be stress relieved by heating it to a temperature of around 500-600°C and then slowly cooling it in the furnace. It is important to carefully control the heating and cooling rates during the heat treatment process to achieve the desired mechanical properties for 7CrSiMnMoV tool steel. Additionally, proper post-heat treatment processes such as grinding, polishing, and coating may be required to achieve the final desired surface finish and performance of the tool steel.

    For hot forged or hot rolled bar, usually the delivery condition is hot forged or rolled, annealed, rough turned.
    For hot forged plate, usually the delivery condition is hot forged, annealed, milled surface.

    For hot rolled plate, usually the delivery condition is hot rolled, annealed, black surface.
